Town Of Caledon Community Energy & Emissions
Pratus Group developed Community Energy and Emissions Plans for four separate Landowners Groups per Official Plan requirements set by the Region of Peel and the Town of Caledon. Land use for the Plan Areas is diverse, with major commercial nodes, industrial employment areas, mixed use development, and low-rise residential uses envisioned.
The scope of work involved estimating energy consumption demands for the proposed community for business as usual and developing net zero scenarios. The study also considered the potential for deployment of district-scale energy systems. High-level costing was also completed to support decision-making, and key milestones in the planning and construction timeline were identified to promote the successful implementation of low-carbon technologies.
As this work was completed at the Secondary Plan level, limited information was available to inform the analysis. Pratus Group worked with the project planners, community design specialists, transportation analysts, and the Town of Caledon to develop a methodology and Terms of Reference to guide the development of the studies. Workshops were conducted with different stakeholders to evaluate strategies and to inform landowners of expected equipment requirements and changes to standard practice that would be needed to meet the Town and Region energy and carbon objectives.
The resulting reports are among the first in Ontario to consider low-carbon planning and to evaluate district energy potential early in the planning process.
